It’s never too early to plan for Christmas!

If you are like me, you know it can be easy to procrastinate making home-made gifts for your friends and family. So this year, I am starting early by getting my Christmas cards ready now. Then when Christmas comes around, and the business sets in, I won’t be rushing around to get supplies or trying to find time to paint the cards. If we get our homemade crafts done now, we can sit back and enjoy the busy holiday season. Let’s get started!

Here is a video of how this card is made. Keep reading below for more details.

Mixing Paints

Before we begin painting we need to get our paint ready and into our mixing pallet.

  1. Create a thick wash of Alizarin Crimson in your pallet. Use less water than paint to create a thick red paint mixture.
  2. Create a thick wash of Alizarin Crimson and Ivory White in your pallet. Combine these two colors with an equal amount of water to create a light pink paint mixture.
  3. Create an even wash of Sage Green in your pallet. Use an even amount of water then paint to create a green paint mixture.
  4. Create a thick wash of Yellow Ocre in your pallet. Use less water than paint to create a thick gold paint mixture.
  5. Create a light wash of Black in your pallet. Use more water than paint to create a grey/silver paint mixture.

Creating a Watercolor Card

Step 1:

To make this painting into a card there is a very important step we need to begin with. You have two options. You can either buy pre-made watercolor cards, or you can fold your watercolor paper in half to make a card. I will be folding my watercolor paper in half, creating a 4×5 card.

Let’s Paint!

Step 2:

Begin by painting in circles randomly around your watercolor paper. Use the green, red, gold, and pink paint mixtures to create the circles. A tip to follow would be not to have the same color right next to each other. Have fun playing with the color combinations, there really isn’t a right or wrong here.

Wait till this step has completely dried before moving on.

Step 2 Christmas colored dots

Step 3:

Grab your white ink pen and let’s sketch our designs onto these ornaments. Below you will see the four different designs I choose. I created a snowflake for the red ornaments, curved lines for the gold ornaments, lines & zigzags for the green ornaments, and dots for the pink ornaments. Feel free to copy my designs or get creative and come up with your own.

Step 4:

To complete this Christmas watercolor card all we have to do is add hangers onto the ornaments. I chose to add hooks to the ornaments, but feel free to add whatever ornament hanger you like instead. Let’s see how it’s done!

Below is a picture showing my ornament hooks. I used the gold paint to create the red and pink ornament’s hooks, and I used the silver/grey paint for the green and gold ornament’s hooks.

To paint an ornament hook, all you have to do is create an uneven small box on top of the ornament and painting upward from the box create a hook shape.

Congrats! You’re Done!

  1. I was wondering what you used to make the white lines on the ornaments. A white paint pen is a great idea. This is such a cute painting for the holidays!
