Round Brush

Two Cups of Water

Sage Green

Alzarian Crimson

Yellow Ochre

All of these colors can be found in this perfect beginner set of watercolor paints. This is the exact set I am using in the video above to create this painting. I highly recommend this product to you if you are looking for a beginner set of paints.

Step 1:

One of the aspects of this painting that keeps it so simple and easy is the fact that we do not have to draw anything! We can just grab our paintbrush and begin painting.

We are going to start with our round brush, and using a mixture of sage green we are going to paint in a curved line, starting at the top right corner going slightly downward till it reaches the center of the page.

Next, we are going to take that same green mixture and begin painting in quick lines to create the pine needles on our Christmas tree branch.

These quick lines should start off being short, and as you paint up toward the top right corner gradually increase the length of the pine needles.

While this first layer of green paint is still wet, mix together sage green with ultramarine blue to create a dark blue-green color and begin adding pine needles toward the center of the branch with this color. This will help our tree have some dimension.

Step 2:

Let’s begin painting our Christmas ornament by using a very watery light wash of Alzarian Crimson. We are going to be using the wet-on-wet technique, so using a lot of water with this first layer will help our paint move around.

Using that light wash of Alzarian Crimson, paint in a large circle in the middle of your page underneath the Christmas tree branch. While the paint is still wet, add a darker mixture of Alzarian Crimson to the outer edges of the ornament, mainly on the right side. Leave a lot of the left side of the ornament the original paint color.

Let this step completely dry before moving on.

Step 3:

For this step, we are simply going to repeat the last step, by adding another layer of the light wash of Alzarian Crimson, then building up the darker areas with the darker mixture of Alzarian crimson over the last layer.

This step will help our ornament appear to be more vibrant.

Step 4:

Lastly, we are going to add a tie to our ornament and splatter over the entire painting!

To create the hook or the tie area of the ornament, dip your small round brush into a thick wash of yellow ochre paint. Then create a small square shape on the top of the ornament. Fill in the square shape with the yellow ochre leaving a little bit of white space at the top right of the shape.

Then with a light amount of pressure, paint a straight line going up to the tree branch.

Let’s splatter the painting! First, cover up the tree branch section with a scrap piece of paper. Now, we can load up our round brush with Alzarian Crimson paint and a lot of water, and tap the paintbrush over the entire painting.

Let this section dry, and you’re done!
