I am so excited to share my process for making these four winter watercolor bookmarks with you!

In this watercolor painting for beginners tutorial, I will share with you how to create four winter bookmarks using basic watercolor skills. This tutorial is perfect for anyone new to watercolor or just looking to make a fun winter bookmark.

Let’s jump in and see how each of these bookmarks was made.

There is a full video tutorial at the end of this post!

Supplies Needed:

Watercolor paper

Painter’s tape

Watercolor paint

Flat brush

Round brush

Two cups of water

Paper Towel

Paint Colors Used:

Payne’s Gray

Ultramarine Blue

Viridian Hue

Dioxazin Purple

Permanent Rose

Chinese White

All of these colors can be found in this perfect beginner set of watercolor paints. This is the exact set I am using in the video above to create this painting. I highly recommend this product to you if you are looking for a beginner set of paints.

Step 1:

To begin our bookmark you will want to frame each bookmark with painter’s tape. This will give each bookmark a clean white frame at the end of this tutorial.

Next, use your flat brush to add an even glaze of water over the entire bookmark.

Then dip your flat brush into your Ultramarine blue + a little Payne’s Gray paint mixture and apply it over the entire bookmark. Make the top of the bookmark darker than the bottom by adding more paint to the top and diluting the paint with water as you work toward the bottom.

For the other three bookmarks, start with the Ultramarine Blue + Payne’s Gray paint on the top till the center of the page, then blend in the second color starting at the bottom painting upward.

Let all four bookmarks dry before moving on.

Step 2:

This step is easy and a lot of fun to do!

Fill up your medium round brush with a lot of white paint and water, then tap the paintbrush of your bookmark to create snow on each bookmark.

That’s it! How easy was that step?

Step 3:

Now, all we have to do is add our tree line to each bookmark!

Dip your small detail round brush into a thick (more paint than water) mixture of Payne’s Gray. Next, create a thin line to give you the base for the tree trunk.

Then all you have to do is zig-zag lines downward starting small then getting thicker as you paint down.

And that’s it! Congrats! You’re done!
